The Vikings and L'Anse aux Meadows

L'Anse aux Meadows, a National Historic Site, where Leif Eiriksson and his group of 60 - 90 Norseman set up camp around 1000 years ago.  The region called Vinland served as their winter base to explore the area in search of hardwood lumber and grapes (which grew wild in New Brunswick).  If you love history, as I do, this is a wonderful place to explore.   The park has a guided tour, which I highly recommend, the guides are very knowledgeable.  The Canadian government has recreated turf huts (made out of peat) each outfitted as it was 1000 years ago.  It's amazing how spacious they were. The scenery is gorgeous with rolling hills and ocean views on 3 sides, we were even able to see an iceberg offshore.  This is the furthest north the road goes in Newfoundland we will now have to turn around and head south.

Tonight we are boondocking in a little off the road park that overlooks a rocky secluded lake (approximately 300 acres) that is surrounded by pine trees.  We feel sooo fortunate to be the only people on the lake. Maybe we will see a bear or moose!

Happy Travels!  Joni :)
